I was making Abbey some pants and decided welt pockets were the way to go. So I cut out my rectangle you want it to be at least twice the height of the pocket opening and then enough over lap on the sides as well. The small rectangle drawn on is the actual size of the pocket. You will want to sketch your pocket on to the pant. (place rectangle right sides together with pant) Then sew around the edge of the drawn rectangle.
Then cut a slit down the middle of the rectangle and diagonally into the corners.
Then turn the rectangle around to the back of the pant. (inside) Press flat.
Now we will switch to the "fake pocket" since there are pictures missing from the pants.
Fold the top flap all the way down.
Then fold the raw edge back up so you have a bit of an accordion fold. Press flat.
Then do the same with the bottom. Fold all the way up.
And then fold it half back. Press flat.
Then from the front you can see how it looks. This one is half and half (as in the top and bottom are even) You can play around with the proportions for the actual pants I made I had the top 1/3 and the bottom 2/3. It's your pocket do what you want to.
Next for the faux part. No need to worry about adding a perfect pocket lining. Just cut out a rectangle and lay it down over the back.
Then topstitch the whole thing in place around the pocket. See how the fabric covers underneath the slit? Perfect.
Here is a picture of them on the pants.
There you have it cute little faux welt pockets. Such a great little detail for any pants!
See you guys back here tomorrow for the link party!
